Wine lovers may toast to the news that among the most promising of these is resveratrol, a disease-fighting antioxidant found abundantly in the skin of red and purple grapes and in red wine.
[mrc] While it's in the skin, it does need to be concentrated to get therapeutic amounts - just eating a few grapes isn't going to do it.
At Harvard Medical School, researchers found that resveratrol slowed aging in mice fed a high-calorie diet, allowing them to remain healthy and disease-free for longer.
It's intriguing research, says Mark Hyman, MD, former co-medical director of Canyon Ranch and author of UltraMetabolism (Scribner) -- but, he points out, you'd have to drink hundreds of bottles of wine a day to achieve the equivalent intake of the mice in the study.
[mrc] It's important to know that in the original studies researchers only used the amount of resveratrol found in one 5oz glass of red wine. The higher amounts are now being used to make a case for buying a drug that's being developed. They are hoping everyone forgets a decade of research showing the ridiculously high amounts they are now touting aren't needed for amazing health benefits.
And he adds, no remedy can ever counteract the negative impact of poor lifestyle choices as we age. Still, Dr. Hyman was happy to discuss these findings with me, and offer advice on natural choices we can make to help ward off the degeneration and diseases of aging and remain healthy in our sunset years.
ABOUT THE STUDY
First, let's take a closer look at the study. Researchers put two groups of middle-aged mice on a high-fat diet (60% of calories from fat). One group was given high doses of resveratrol, and the other was not. When comparing the mice on high-fat diets, the resveratrol group fared much better. They had lower levels of blood glucose (blood
sugar) and insulin, livers that were smaller and healthier, and also lived months longer.

In another study published in the journal Cell, mice that were given high levels of resveratrol doubled their exercise endurance in comparison to mice that were not.
[mrc] This is of particular interest to athletes.
Specifically, researchers found that resveratrol...
* Improved insulin sensitivity, contributing to more efficient blood
sugar control.
* Increased the number and function of mitochondria (the key power and
energy producers in cells), increasing the body's capacity to convert food into energy and burn calories.
* Improved motor function, making even older mice more agile.
WHAT THESE RESULTS MEAN
Dr. Hyman says these findings reinforce that glucose control, insulin sensitivity and mitochondrial function are key factors in aging. He said that scientists are excited about resveratrol because it appears to have a positive effect on these functions -- which, when they don't operate optimally, make us more susceptible to inflammation, obesity and age-related diseases such as cardiovascular disease, dementia, etc. In Dr. Hyman's view, however, while some degree of anti-aging benefits might theoretically be achieved with resveratrol (at least in mice), the perfect solution will never come in a bottle of wine, or a bottle of pills for that matter.
THE NATURAL PATH TO HEALTHY AGING
Taking positive steps toward a healthy lifestyle will naturally help protect us from degenerative aging and age-related diseases. To accomplish this, Dr. Hyman recommends strategies such as...
* Increase your intake of healthy fats. These have been demonstrated
to reduce inflammation, and lower the risk of heart attack, stroke and depression. Rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids include deep water fish (such as salmon, black cod and tuna), walnuts, pumpkin seeds, flaxseed and flaxseed oil.
[mrc] Unfortunately many of the fish are tainted with heavy metals and other toxic materials so you may want to use Advanced Omega to get your Essential Fatty Acids.
* Eat protein with every meal. In particular, consume protein (e.g.,
eggs, poultry, fish, lean meat, nuts, legumes or tofu) at breakfast each morning to regulate insulin levels, curb appetite and start the day on an even keel.
* Consider supplements that support one or more of the following --
insulin function, blood sugar control and mitochondria. In particular, Dr. Hyman recommends coenzyme Q-10, which benefits mitochondrial function... Chromium (such as chromium polynicotinate), which improves glucose control... Acetyl-l-carnitine, alpha-lipoic acid, magnesium and fish oil, which benefit both glucose and mitochondrial function.
Consult your health care practitioner before use and for dosages.

* Get moving. To fine-tune the mitochondria, you need to exercise and
build muscle. Each week, make it a point to schedule two to three 20- minute strength-training sessions, and at least three 30-minute periods of aerobic conditioning. In particular, Dr. Hyman recommends interval training, in which you alternate fast (or intense) and moderate (or lighter) exercise (e.g., a series of short sprints followed by walking).
* Practice effective stress management. Whether you achieve this
through meditation, exercise or a long walk on the beach is up to you, but it's essential to keep stress under control. Anxiety increases the body's level of cortisol, a hormone that disturbs blood sugar levels.
* Reduce your exposure to toxins. Our bodies are regularly bombarded
with environmental insults, including pesticides, smog, heavy metals and other pollutants. These trigger inflammation, which is at the root of many of the diseases and conditions we associate with aging and damage the mitochondria.
The "secret" to healthful aging is not really such a secret, notes Dr.
Hyman. Just commit to living healthfully. Get back to basics, watch your diet, exercise, control your weight and stress levels -- and, if you like, toast the good life from time to time with a glass of red wine, too.
[mrc] And of course; don't forget to supplement! Everyone should be taking Ultra Vitality and Genesis every day.
